Review: L'Oreal Lip Lacquer in Rose On and On

I've been on a serious drugstore product review kick lately, but as I mentioned in my Maybelline Color Whisper review, the drugstore has really been killing it lately! Today's product is the L'Oreal Lip Lacquer ($7.99) in the shade Rose On and On and these Lip Lacquers are supposed to be dupes of the YSL Glossy Stains. Unfortunately, I've never tried a YSL Glossy Stain so I can't really compare it but I can imagine how this product is supposed to work and whether it's a good product in general.

I'm going to be honest, I'm too cheap to buy the YSL Glossy Stains, they're $34 compared to this product's $7.99 so I was really hoping this would be a good alternative. However, without even having tried a Glossy Stain to compare it to, I can already tell that this product is probably nowhere near being a dupe.

So let's start off with the application, I've tried a Glossy Stain at Sephora before and the applicator sponge is quite comparable. They both taper towards the end and have that indent in the middle but I feel as if the Lip Lacquer applicator doesn't deposit the product as well as that of the Glossy Stain. In fact, I have some trouble applying the product evenly all over my lips and do have to go back a second time to make sure I didn't miss any gaps.

As for the actual product itself, it's a very watery formula and I'm not sure if this is true for all the Lip Lacquers, but my shade was very sheer. My lips were only a slight shade of rosy pink whereas when I had tried the YSL Glossy Stains on in the store, they were very pigmented. The product goes on wet and as it dries it begins to stain your lips with color. However, I've noticed that sometimes the color will not stain your lips the same color all around, some patches are lighter than others and I'll sometimes have to go in with a third coat to make sure my lips don't look diseased.

The stain lasts for about two to three hours before it starts to fade and when it fades is when it's at its worst. As the color begins to fade, it decides that it wants to fade in patches, so remember the trouble I had applying it evenly? It's plagues me once again as the color begins to go away.

I guess you can say that this product isn't much of a lip stain at all and nowhere near a good dupe for the YSL Glossy Stains. I had high hopes for these L'Oreal Lip Lacquers since L'Oreal owns YSL I figured they'd make the best alternative for a very pricey but well loved product. Unfortunately, while this product didn't work out for me I still believe I can find a good drugstore alternative, I've heard the Rimmel Apocalips have finally come to the states, and if not then I guess I'll give in and buy my first YSL lip product!

  3. The packaging is gorgeous! Too bad the product itself isn't that great. I think the YSL lip product will be a nice splurge hehe

  4. Have you tried a different colour? I have Infinite Fuchsia and that one is fairly pigmented and the stain wore evenly for me.

  8. Yeah, I agree. It's not as great as I had expected but it's fairly decent for the price.
